This is a critical point where you need a combination of good advice and personal discretion or else you will be left fully confused, surrounded by myths rather than facts. The first step you need to take is to begin early. Cultivate a habit of reading newspapers and various monthly magazines on a regular basis because knowledge about current affairs plays a crucial role in Civil Services IAS Examination. You will find many good competitive exam magazines that contain the most updated general knowledge facts and figures that will help you upgrade and update your knowledge.
Another question that puzzles you is whether to join a coaching or self-study? Well, this is rather a question of personal choice and preferences. Judge your capabilities and study pattern. If you are diligent and able to follow a self-paced study method without any type of help or supervision by a teacher then it is better to prepare on your own. But if you are someone who needs constant motivation and learns better in a group, go ahead and join a coaching. Many students prefer coaching as it sets routines, targets, and directional approach.
The next important step is choosing the right optional subject. Choose one that is your favorite and you are naturally inclined towards it. This is important as you will have to make an in-depth study of this subject and revise things time and again. If you don’t find it interesting you might as well end up leaving it half way.
You also need to come up with an organized study schedule and study accordingly to ease and regularize your preparation. Also, remember to put quality over quantity. A well-planned study schedule of 8 hours is better than 16 hours of mugging up irrelevant stuff.
A comprehensive knowledge of NCERT textbooks and other reference books from class VI to XII will help you greatly as they are a great source of coherent information. Study the books thoroughly and make your own short notes. This is very important because you need to study intensively and short notes come in handy when you wish to revise any topic. Also, subscribe to some relevant monthly magazines and competitive exam magazines as they contain the important essence of various books and help you to prepare better.
